Donald L. Crain ’70, 2018 John E. Dolibois Award recipient

Donald L. CrainJust call Don Crain the “Mr. Miami” of this generation. Name a Miami board, Don has probably served on it. Name an alumni event, Don attended it. Name a Miami Athletics fundraising effort, Don helped support it.

When thinking of an alumnus or alumna who characterizes continuous service to Miami, there’s no better example than Don Crain.

For 34 years, Don has practiced law as a highly successful corporate and management labor attorney at Frost Brown Todd while proudly serving his alma mater. Most recently, he served on the Miami Board of Trustees (2006-2015), with two years as vice chair and two years as chair. He has also served as member and president of the Red & White Club Board and as a member of the Miami Middletown Citizens Advisory Council. He has taught classes in the Farmer School of Business and is active with the Baseball Alumni Board. Twice, Don has earned the Don Loss Volunteer of the Year Award.

He and his wife, Susan ’73, have also been active supporters of the Graduating Champions campaign, a fundraising effort to advance Miami Athletics. They recently endowed the Donald and Susan Crain Baseball Scholarship.

“There is no one who better embodies the values defined in Miami’s Code of Love and Honor and no one who more richly deserves the John E. Dolibois award than Don Crain,” said David Budig ’84, Miami University Trustee. “Anything that has ever been asked of Don has always been met with a resounding ‘yes.’ Anyone who knows Don understands why his nickname is ‘Mr. Miami.’

“When you define Love and Honor, two names that immediately come to mind are John Dolibois and Don Crain.”
