NMAAM is the only museum dedicated to preserving and celebrating the many music genres created, influenced, and inspired by African Americans. The museum’s expertly-curated collections share the story of the American soundtrack by integrating history and interactive technology to bring the musical heroes of the past into the present. Miami professor and renowned musicologist Dr. Tammy Kernodle will offer a lecture entitled Nashville’s Black Music History, which chronicles the history of black music making in Nashville from the rise of the Fisk Jubilee Singers in 1871 to contemporary musicians who have contributed to the progression of gospel, soul, and country music. This lecture will take place in the Radnor room at the Westin. After the lecture, the group will walk to NMAAM together before taking a docent-led tour.

After the lecture, participants will take a docent-led interactive tour of the museum and will enjoy personal time to explore on their own.

The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, often called the “Smithsonian of country music,” is celebrated for its broad cultural impact, educational mission, and unrivaled collection of historically important artifacts related to country music. Starting with Stories Behind the Songs, our group will discover the stories behind the music you love in a private session with one of Nashville’s hit-making songwriters. This intimate session allows the rare opportunity to hear hits as they were originally written. The writer demonstrates to the group how a song is created from concept to hit. After the session, join the writer for a meet and greet and autograph signing. After the songwriting session, participants can explore the museum at their leisure. (No group return)
*Must meet registration minimum for program to occur.

A quick stop from downtown Nashville to Marathon Village takes visitors back in time as they step foot inside Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery. Digging into the past didn’t turn up skeletons and scandals for brothers Andy and Charlie Nelson; more like sour mash and stills. After discovering their triple great-grandfather ran one of the most successful whiskey distilleries in pre-prohibition America, the brothers vowed to revive the since-forgotten family business. Come along for a distillery tour, followed by a tasting and light bites. As a bonus to our attendees, Miami professor Dr. Mike Crowder will join us to talk about the chemistry of and stories about Tennessee whiskeys and bourbon, and share details of related research happening at Miami. Each participant will receive a Miami Glencairn tasting glass.

(Limit 25 people per time slot)

2-4 p.m., 224 Rep. John Lewis Way South
$80 per person
Walking group departs from the Westin (approximately 0.4 miles), public parking options available

As one of America’s oldest working letterpress print shops, Hatch Show Print has played a significant role in shaping the visual language of Music City since 1879. This private “Block Party” is a two-hour program where guests hand-print carvings from a 144-year-old collection onto various paper sizes, tote bags, pencil pouches, tea towels, and T-shirts. We’ll begin the experience with a brief introduction of Hatch Show Print’s history in music city. They say folks do get inky – that’s part of the fun (but we get to wear aprons)! We’ll create as much as we want in the two hours and then the Hatch team will pack up our inky projects for safe travel. Every participant receives a souvenir Block Party poster as well as a 10% discount in the retail store.
(Limit 12 people)

Items will take 24 hours to dry and Hatch Show Print recommends visitors take their posters out to cure in the air overnight to avoid sticking together while drying. Please be aware Hatch does not pull any type for this program; people cannot typeset their name, anniversary, or favorite artist. There are carved taglines that read things like Rodeo, Nashville, TN, Circus, Baseball, and other words available for printing.
