Cornerstone 4: Digital Innovation and Technology

We Will Reinvent

By the year 2025, the total amount of data created and consumed across the globe is anticipated to reach 180 zettabytes. That’s 1 sextillion bytes, or nearly three times the amount of data in the world today.

What does that mean? The digital world is growing at a pace we can barely comprehend. Inextricably linked to this growth are technological innovation, new business practices, privacy and security concerns, and certainly not least, the world’s economy. At Miami University, we have already established a reputation for acumen in data science and digital technologies. To keep up with and even anticipate the rapidly branching disciplines and exponential growth of the digital economy, we will invest in our programs, students, faculty, staff, and facilities.

We will invest in transdisciplinary scholarship and collaboration, push the bounds of new technologies, and create a new home for data science and analytics. Together, we will chart the course of future digital growth.

Data science and artificial intelligence are having a profound impact on all sectors of the economy, and especially here at MarketAxess. The demand for data science skills is growing rapidly in every industry. It is gratifying to help Miami build a distinctive program with this gift, which will increase access to data science programs for Miami students for many decades to come. – Rick McVey ’81

Cornerstone News

How will we invest in transdisciplinary scholarship and collaboration, push the bounds of new technologies, and create a new home for data science and analytics?

Named for Rick McVey ’81, this facility will be home to transdisciplinary departments in data science, including Emerging Technology in Business + Design, Statistics, and Computer Science and Software Engineering. It will also enable robust collaboration with the Department of Information Systems and Analytics. Our Center for Analytics and Data Science will occupy an open-plan space in the new building and serve as a hub for collaboration. State-of-the-art XR stage facilities will provide Hollywood-level capabilities for projection mapping and blended reality, while the Cyber Security Lab and Robotics/Maker Lab will drive innovation daily.
The College of Engineering and Computing will reimagine engineering and computing education to create visionary programs and degrees of the future. Plans for a cutting-edge renovation to King Library include expanding electronic collections and digitization initiatives.
A state-of-the-art facility is just a building unless it is populated with the right people doing the right work. Together, we will invest in expert faculty across majors. We will invest in innovative programs that provide hands-on experience working with visualization equipment, robotics, eye-tracking, and more. We will invest in partnerships both internal and external for visionary interdisciplinary work and projects with real-world applications.
