Annual Advancement Awards presented on May 3

Joyce and Roger HoweMiami University honored several individuals and one group during the annual Advancement Awards ceremony on May 3 at Shriver Center.

Roger ’57 and Joyce Howe ’57, Sharon Mills Draper M.A. ’73 and the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma were among the honorees during the recognition program hosted by the Miami University Alumni Association and Miami University Foundation. The Howes, founders of Miami’s Howe Writing Initiative and the Howe Center for Writing Excellence, received the Philanthropists of the Year Award, while renowned author and educator Draper accepted the Distinguished Achievement Medal. The Miami Tribe was this year’s Bishop Medal recipient, an award that dates back to 1936. 

Other honorees included J. Andrew Zeisler ’88 (A.K. Morris Award), Phyllis Callahan (Dave Roberts Award), Elaine Sullivan (Honorary Alumni Award), David Budig ’84 (John E. Dolibois Award), Doug Troy ’74 (William Holmes McGuffey Award), Sue Henry ’73 (Spirit of Philanthropy Award), Claire Coyne ’19 (Student Philanthropist of the Year), Christopher Ballard ’07 (Young Philanthropist of the Year), and Scott Butts ’19 and Ambika Kumar ’19 (Love and Honor Cup).

“It is such an impressive list of alumni, colleagues and friends of the university,” said Tom Herbert, senior vice president of University Advancement and president of the Miami University Foundation. “This is a group of Miamians who reflect the values and best of what Miami stands for as they make a difference in the world.”
