Welcome from the Chair
Bryan Marshall
Dear Alumni and Friends:
Spring in Oxford has been full of surprises. We’ve gone from early blossoms in March, to snow in April, and right back to blossoms. With the promise of sunshine and warmth, I’m reminded of all the best things spring has to offer, including the privilege of watching another wonderful group of Miami seniors graduate and set out to change their communities for the better.
Despite all the unique challenges of COVID-19, our students adapted, persevered, and accomplished great things throughout the year. This keeps me excited for our students—their future, and the road ahead for Miami. I’m also very thankful for all the incredible work of our faculty and staff here in Harrison Hall—they’ve remained focused on our mission with students—both inside and outside of the classroom.
We have a lot to celebrate when it comes to our students. But so much of what we do would not be possible without your involvement. One thing I do appreciate and admire is how fortunate Miami is to have alums who are willing to share their time, resources, and wisdom with our students. I see your impact daily, whether it is from returning to campus, mentoring, helping with internships and careers, or the countless other ways you inspire and open doors of opportunity for our students.
Thank you for all you do.

Here’s just a taste of news and the many great things that happened this spring:
Our incoming class is shaping up to be the largest (at over 4,600 students) and most diverse in Miami’s long history. We continue to see the number of students grow in political science—this all bodes well for the recent programs we’ve added in Social Data Analytics and Public Health.

We had an extraordinary group of seniors win the 2021 President’s Distinguished Service Award. These students were recognized for their remarkable service—above and beyond—to strengthen the Miami community. Several of the 19 honorees, pictured above, were our very own students from the Department of Political Science.
Two of our students also engaged their passion in research and writing to publish articles:
It is not just the students bringing home the hardware and recognition, but so have our faculty. For example, my colleague and friend, Dr. Patrick Haney, has been a role model for so many of us here at Miami. He received the William Holmes McGuffey Award in recognition of his tenacious advocacy beyond the classroom and for all that is Miami.
Bob Woodward
Even with the COVID-19 environment—and all the trappings of remote/hybrid learning, we’ve been true to Miami form by bringing the outside world into our classrooms to engage our students.
This spring we’ve had a wide range of exciting talks, university lectures, and alumni roundtables. In February, Bob Woodward gave a virtual talk, “How We Got Here, The State of the American Presidency” for the Miami University Lecture Series.
The Menard Family Center for Democracy successfully launched a series of talks during the spring semester that you can see here Dialogues on Democracy.

Miami’s Center for Career Exploration and Success hosted a very popular alumni career roundtable in March on how students can make a successful path to Capitol Hill. We had a great conversation with our alumni (pictured above, left to right): Olivia Shields '13 (formerly Hnat), chief of staff at the U.S. House, Lot Kwarteng ’14, legislative assistant at U.S. Senate, and Stephen Hostelley ’14, legislative director at U.S. House.
We also had a lively debate with the JANUS Forum remote lecture in March, "President Biden’s First 100 Days," featuring Valerie Jarrett and Marc Short and moderated by political science student Sophie Hess.
