In an effort to stay on the cutting edge of technology and deliver more of what Miami’s alumni want, the Miami University Alumni Association has partnered with students from Miami’s Mobile Learning Center to enhance the experience of its regional networking events.
Since the introduction of 5-Minute Networking events over the past few years, which have taken place in select regional locations including Chicago, Atlanta, and at the Voice of America Learning Center in West Chester, Ohio, demand has grown nationally for similar events.
“These events put Miamians in touch with other Miamians from their regions, and they serve a variety of purposes,” said Erin Taute ’08, assistant director of alumni relations. “You might be new to the area, looking for a career transition or simply wanting to socialize with other Miamians – the events have something for everyone.”
With the introduction of Miami LIVE! Speed Networking events, the MUAA has built upon and enhanced this concept so it works more seamlessly and dramatically increases the number of Miamians each alum is able to engage. Instead of meeting alumni one-on-one, as in past events, alumni will now rotate through small groups, allowing them to meet more than twice the number of attendees they could encounter in the previous format.
This is aided through the development of an iPad application, with assistance from students in Miami’s Mobile Learning Center, under the direction of associate professor of computer science and software engineering Gerald Gannod. This software allows the event moderator to register attendees as they arrive, and seamlessly routs them from one group to another, so they’re continually meeting new people throughout the evening.
These students will be present, at the culmination of this capstone project, when one of the pilot events is hosted April 21 in Chicago. The inaugural event takes place April 11 in Atlanta and future events are being scheduled for Columbus, Cleveland, and Washington, D.C.
