The Miami University Alumni Association believes that a Miamian is any student, alumni, faculty member, staff member, administrator or friend of the University who is interested in bettering our University.
Identity Standards
A distinct identity has been created as the visual embodiment of the Miami University Alumni Association’s mission to preserve Miami’s heritage and cultivate relationships that connect Miamians to the University for a lifetime. The past — 1809, the year Miami University was founded with the passage of an Act of Charter by the General Assembly of the state of Ohio. This legislative act designated that a university be located in the area of the Miami River valleys in southwestern Ohio. It is from the name of these valleys, and to honor the heritage of the local Indian tribe, that this university became Miami University.
The present — the Miami M logo used today. This M, most commonly seen adorning the uniforms of Miami’s proud athletic teams, provides a distinctive and recognizable emblem unique to Miami University.
The future — the Upham Hall arch. As Walter Havighurst explained in the Miami Album, “…when dedicated in 1947 this building stood between Miami’s past and its future. Westward lay the original campus and its venerated halls. Eastward would rise an arc of science buildings, bordering the ancient woods. Latin, Greek and Logic, the classical curriculum, in one direction, in the other, Physics, Geology, Chemistry and Computer Systems. Through the Upham arch the Old Miami faces the New. The Upham arch still stands today and through this arch passed the Miamians of yesterday and today and represents future Miamians who will pass through this revered landmark yet tomorrow.”
Included in this document are standards for proper implementation of the Miami University Alumni Association logo. Adhering to these standards will help deliver a consistent message throughout all Miami University Alumni Association communication materials as it supports the overall positioning statement of this organization:
“Miami University’s strength is its people: alumni, faculty and students as well as the many friends of the University. The Miami family is bonded together by a common pride and respect for the tradition of excellence that is the hallmark of the Miami University experience.
The Alumni Association is committed to preserving Miami’s heritage and cultivating the relationships that connect us all to Miami University for a lifetime.
