Romano named 2007-08 Effective Educator
Dr. Tom Romano, a Miami University professor since 1995, has been named the Miami University Alumni Association 2007-08 Effective Educator Award recipient. The Effective Educator Award was established by the Miami University Alumni Association in 1983 to honor individuals at Miami who educate and inspire students to new heights. This award recognizes those great educators who have made a profound difference in the lives of their students.
During his tenure at Miami, Romano has been recognized as the Outstanding English Language Arts Educator at the University Level by the Ohio Council of Teachers of English Language Arts. He has also been recognized as an outstanding professor by Miami University’s Associated Student Government (2002), and was an Effective Educator Award Nominee in 2003.
This year’s Effective Educator nominations were requested from graduates of the class of 2003. The following excerpts were submitted by Lisa Ayers Speiller.
“Dr. Romano didn’t just preach pedagogy in his classroom. He lived it. This stellar professor emulated all the qualities of an outstanding educator – efficacy, knowledge, magnetism, compassion, and humility. In short, he served as a perfect role model for future teachers.
“A good teacher’s influence is unending. Dr. Romano’s influence didn’t cease when we left his classroom. We weren’t Dr. Romano’s students for a semester. We were his students forever.”

Effective Educator
The Effective Educator Award was established by the Miami University Alumni Association in 1983 to honor special individuals at Miami who educate and inspire students to new heights. This award recognizes those great educators who have made a profound difference in the lives of their students.
Nominations
This year’s Effective Educator nominations were requested from graduates of the Class of 2003. Beginning July 1, 2007, graduates from that class submitted nominations. Questions about the Effective Educator Award should be directed to Brian Breittholz at (513) 529-5957.
